Tai Chi, or Taiji, is short for Tai Chi Chuan (Taiji Quan 太極拳) and is an ancient Chinese Martial Art, and Daoist (Taoist 道) Health Practice, that today is generally focused on it's health & healing aspects, and is practiced as an enjoyable & interesting health nourishing exercise & philosophy that helps you maintain good health, relaxation & vitality.
Qi Gong (氣功) are deep breathing, stretching and mobility Health Nourishing Exercises for ones Body, Mind and Spirit.
Meditation (Mingxiang 冥想) is a practice involving mental and physical techniques to deliberately focus ones attention and bring about feelings of calm, heightened energy and awareness, as well as improving brain health and overall well-being. Regular meditation offers many health benefits, such as reduced stress and anxiety.
The graceful movements of this Martial Art reflect a history of centuries of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) & Daoist (Taoist) Philosophy & Health Practices, which western science is also gradually catching up to, confirming & validating many aspects of ancient knowledge & wisdom each year.
The regular & consistent practice of Tai Chi (太極) & Qi Gong (氣功) has been shown to have many benefits to the physical & mental health and well being of people of all ages and fitness levels. It is particularly helpful for those wishing to improve mobility & balance, relieve stress or anxiety, strengthen the immune system and increase one's general health & vitality, as well as when recuperating from surgery, illness or injury.
In my role as a Practitioner (OMD) of Traditional Chinese and Oriental Medicine, I've found Tai Chi to be very beneficial for a wide range of ailments, including, as mentioned, stress, anxiety, hypertension, weak immune system and pain management, for example. Further, Tai Chi (Taiji Quan) and Qi Ging (Chi Kung) are forms of preventative medicine.
As well as healing or managing various forms of illness & disease, it can also assist or support western medical treatment as a form of Complementary Medicine (CAM), often in the manner of managing the side effects of those treatments, and thus help one to endure the sometimes harsh, yet benefical, pharmaceutical drug, surgical, or other treatment regimes, required, for such illnesses.
Of course, Tai Chi is a Martial Art, and at Summer Hill Tai Chi one can also study the Martial Art side of Tai Chi. Infact studying the whole Art, including the Martial side, holistically will provide superior health and healing benefits than strictly focusing only on the Health side alone.
Very simplistically, Tai Chi or Tai Chi Chuan (Taiji Quan 太極拳) is a Chinese Martial Art that for many today is generally focused on it's health & healing aspects, and is practiced as an enjoyable health nourishing exercise that helps you maintain good health, relaxation & vitality. There are both solo, partner and weapons practices. The graceful movements of this Martial Art reflect a history of centuries of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) & Daoist (Taoist) Philosophy, which western science is also gradually confirming & validating.
The regular practice of Tai Chi has been shown to have many benefits to the health and well being of people of all ages and fitness levels. It is particularly helpful for those wishing to improve mobility & balance, relieve stress, strengthen the immune system increase one's health & vitality, as well as recuperating from illness or injury.
Tai Chi Chuan (太極拳) is simply an older way of romanising the Chinese word 'Taiji Quan' (太極拳) into English. The same as we once romanised (& pronounced) the Capital of China as "Peking" (北京), and nowadays we use "Beijing" (北京). You can see the Chinese Characters are the same.
Tai Chi / Taiji is simply an abbreviated form of the full name Tai Chi Chuan / Taiji Quan
Tai Chi includes the practice of Qi Gong (see below)
Regarding Yin- Yang philosophy: It often expressed that Tai Chi is the Yang aspect and Qi Gong is the Yin aspect
Again very simplistically, Qi Gong (氣功),or Qigong/Chi Kung, are forms of Deep Breathing Health Nourishing Exercises. They involve aspects of stillness, movement, stretching, flexing/tensing, combined with deep abdominal breathing. For convenience, Meditation Practices can also be included under this term.
Benefits of Qi Gong are increasingly recognized worldwide and within scientific community. Qigong benefits range from mind relaxation and sharpening, stress relief to increased energy, vitality and helping to heal degenerative and chronic diseases.
Qigong exercises integrate body postures, movement, breathing and meditation for a healthy life, spiritual advancement and/or martial arts training.
It is a 5,000-year-old Chinese healthcare modality that has endured the test of time.
Qi Gong can be practiced as a stand alone Art, however it is very often practiced together with Tai Chi, and infact Tai Chi includes Qi Gong within it's practice.
Regarding Yin- Yang philosophy: It often expressed that Tai Chi is the Yang aspect and Qi Gong is the Yin aspect

I fix 'Broken Tai Chi' ... before it breaks you! Incorrect or poorly taught Tai Chi, such as locking out the elbow or knee joints, bad alignment of the hip or knee joints, or other incorrect alignments, structure, methods and so on will not only limit/negate potential health benefits, but can in fact cause injury/damage to the body, particularly over a long period of time. Tai Chi is well known for Strengthening the Knees, for example, and improving one's Health & Vitality, however incorrectly taught it can damage the knees & health!
Further, for Martial Art purposes, incorrect alignment, structure, posture, methods & so on will serve little practical use, and rather benefit your opponent.
Please note: Group Lessons are limited to a maximum of 3-5 people, over several time slots, for quality, detailed instruction & study of Taiji Quan (Tai Chi) & Qi Gong, if you are seeking a large group of people, &/or for mainly socialising, talking, enjoying some nice tea, and monthly yum cha etc, then another or bigger School may be more suitable for you.
